Optical Bonding - Handheld Thermal Sensor

The customer, in this case, has been involved in the imaging module industry for decades, and they specialize in low-volume, customized products production. The end product is a handheld thermal imaging sensor; AMT successfully tackled the challenges and performed optical bonding using our Lucent Gel to bond the LCD and the black plastic mechanism of the products.

CHALLENGE

The client, in this case, had consulted other manufacturers, but the following challenges hindered their manufacturing process:

  1. The handle is a three-dimensional mechanism, which means the normal flat lamination process is out of the question.

  2. The black plastic handle absorbs light of all wavelengths, which affects the UV curing of LOCA during lamination.

  3. Plastic material tends to deform due to increased temperature, so the heat-cured LOCA is also not applicable.

AMT conducted thorough research and resolved these issues for the client when they brought them to us.

SOLUTION

The plastic handle, in this case, is an all-in-one piece (ABS frame plus PC cover) with a particular three-dimensional design. Instead of the acrylic SOCA (colloidal thickness about 0.3mm), AMT adopts our signature Lucent Gel which is thicker (1.5 mm in this case) and much softer which suits this product design well. The features of Lucent Gel enable the gel to fit closely with the slightly curved plastic frame. And due to the nature of Lucent Gel, no curing by heating or UV is needed.

On the other hand, AMT has been dedicated to designing fixtures. Our engineers studied this case thoroughly and custom-designed an institution for this product. With the complementary design of our fixture, we were able to overcome the difficulty of lamination of three-dimensional structures.

This project was demanding; however, AMT is committed to serving our customers and never giving up. After meticulous research and numerous tests, we finally found the ultimate combination of parameters and the most suitable thickness to bond customers' products with the most economical price.
